Writing on the River

I’m just back from a two day writing retreat in Brownville, Nebraska. This is my third writing retreat organized by my friend, Karen Shoemaker. We stay at the River Inn Resort and I make sure to take a trip to the Whiskey Run Creek Winery. It’s an opportunity to connect with existing writer friends and make new writer friends.

I easily spent a third of the time watching the Missouri River. It’s fascinating to see the ice build up along the bank as chunks get caught on sticks and debris and already caught ice until the ice bank stretched many feet toward the current. I could hear the ice catch and squish against the existing ice bank. Watching the Missouri reminds me of how we are all connected. Spending a couple of days watching the water and thinking about where the river comes from and where it goes brings perspective.

This retreat has given me a lot to think about (as retreats are supposed to do). I have lots of fodder for blog posts so stay tuned for more insights from the retreat.
